Mac DeMarco, the “jizz jazz” singer-songwriter and instrumentalist, announced last Tuesday that the release of his new album This Old Dog is slated for May 5. In celebration, Demarco also released two tracks “This Old Dog” and “My Old Man.” This will be the musician’s third full-length album since Demarco’s most notable album Salad Days from 2014.
DeMarco’s move from New York City to Los Angeles had a clear influence on his music. The musician decided to demo the entirety of the album on the East coast hoping to quickly polish his work once he moved to LA. He soon realized that this move was going to take time away from his music. Rather than an easy finish, DeMarco sat on these demos for an extensive length of time creating a more intimate relationship with his album.
In a Rolling Stone article, DeMarco states, “The majority of this album is acoustic guitar, synthesizer, some drum machine, and one song is electric guitar. So this is a new thing for me.” This is noticeably different from Demarco’s signature psychedelic, slacker, lo-fi vibe, which contains heavy synth, keyboard, and electric guitar all of which is prominent in albums 2 and Salad Days.
The album’s title track “This Old Dog” is melodically soothing with an impeccable balance of synth and acoustic guitar. The song’s melancholic sound harmonizes with DeMarco’s wistfully transparent lyrics when he sings, “‘Long as my heart’s beating in my chest/This old dog ain’t about to forget.” The second release “My Old Man” mirrors the same nostalgic warmth by using heavy synth, a drum machine, and an acoustic guitar to brilliantly pair with a beautiful and sincere melody.
Concert dates have also been released for the spring, and DeMarco will also appear at various music festivals including Boston Calling, Coachella, and Hangout.
